Workbench

A wooden workbench with a vise for the workshop.

This project has been in the works for 3 years, with a long pause in between. It started as two cabinets that were meant to connect together to form a bigger workbench, but I realized that

Building the box

I started building it in 2019, but I never got around to finishing it. I built the two cabinets, but they were kind of left as is, with no top or vise. Below you can see how the 2x2 were attached to the sides of the box, which I later realized was a waste of space. Space is a scarcity in a tiny shop like mine.

Building the drawers

This time I used those fancy full-extension ball bearing drawer slides, which are a lot easier to install than the wooden ones, but are a lot more expensive, and only fit drawers that are deep enough. As you can see my lovely assistant is helping me out.

Turning it into a workbench

Fast forward to 2021, I finally got around to finishing the project. I removed the 2x2 from the sides of the box and attached them to a thick top, which was drilled with holes to accept bench dogs. Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the making of the top, but I used a bunch of scrape 2x4s glued together and planed flat, and then covered with a sheet of 1/4" plywood. I also added a vise, which I bought from Amazon.
