Planter Box

A custom built wooden planter box that wraps the corner of my apartment

I built this corner planter box to serve 2 purposes - to hide the unsightly electrical AC cables & tubes, and to provide a place for me to grow herbs and flowers.

The planter is an L shaped box, with 2 & 3 meter long sides. Only the top half of the box is filled with soil to prevent it from getting too heavy.

Building the box

When building the box I had to make sure that the box was strong enough to hold the soil and plants, and to have enough points of contact with the ground and wall to support the weight. The challenging part was to cover the AC tubes and cables, while still allowing access to them.

Sealing and painting

Although this is treated pine (meaning it is already weather resistant), I still wanted to seal it to lengthen its life. I used a tar spray to seal the inside of the box, and then painted the outside with a water based paint. I filled the holes with a wood filler, and sanded the box to make it smooth.

Filling and planting

Before filling the box with soil, I lined the inside with a plastic sheet to prevent the soil from coming into contact with the wood and from leaking out. Then I filled the bottom with rocks to help with drainage, and then filled the rest with soil.

Don't keep this brilliance to yourself.
